News and announcements from DAS UK Group
At DAS, we are committed to taking the right approach to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and doing business responsibly.
We constantly strive to develop and improve our CSR programme, and pride ourselves on being a responsible business.
DAS UK Group, the UK’s leading legal expenses insurer, is one of the latest signatories to the ‘Dying to Work’ charter, a national initiative designed to increase awareness of terminal illness in the workplace and encourage employers to provide increased help and support to any employee facing such challenging circumstances.
In a formal signing at the DAS UK head office in Bristol, Kate Banks, DAS UK’s Group Director of HR & Legal Services, was joined by the mayor of Bristol Marvin Rees, who signed the charter on behalf of Bristol City Council, and Donna Williams from Unite – Britain and Ireland’s largest union – which also added its name to the charter.
The signatories were also joined by Nigel Costley from the TUC which is driving the campaign across the UK.
Unite regional coordinating officer Donna Williams said: “What makes this unique is that two separate organisations, public and private – the city council and DAS UK – have both signed up at the same time to this important charter. The signing sends out a positive message to other employers in the city that support is a much better alternative to dismissing people via the capability route, especially at a time when they and their families will be struggling greatly on both emotional and financial levels.”
Kate Banks, Group Director of HR & Legal Services for DAS UK Group, added: “This initiative supports our values of being absolutely the right thing to do, and we are very happy to be working with Unite and the TUC to give this reassurance to our people.”
Marvin Rees, Mayor, Bristol City Council, said: “I am pleased to sign the Dying to Work Charter on behalf of Bristol City Council. Doing so demonstrates our wholehearted commitment as a caring employer to supporting staff who face this difficult time. I support the campaign to promote awareness of this issue and urge other employers in Bristol to do the same.”
Nigel Costley, TUC, said: “It is hard to imagine how we would feel faced with a terminal diagnosis. Some will want to work for as long as they can. Some will have no choice. It must be a huge relief to know your employer will stand by you.”
